Pickleball 101

What is pickleball?

Pickleball is a paddleball sport (i.e. like a racket sport), a hybrid between tennis and ping pong. For more details on this sport and its history, please refer to the explanation on the USA Pickleball Association website.

You can find the basic summary as well as the official rule books for Pickleball on the USA Pickleball Association website.

If you live near the Folsom area (in Sacramento, California) and want to learn how to play Pickleball, you can look at our Calendar for the Introduction to Pickleball event, normally scheduled on the first Saturday of each month at Lembi Park, Folsom, CA. The monthly introduction classes are free to all.

For recreational play, you can just rate yourself. One way is to use the Definitions of Player Skill Ratings rubric by USA Pickleball Association.

For a more official rating, you will need to participate in national tournaments to build up your skill rating. You can find national tournaments on the USA Pickleball Association website.

Playing at Lembi Park

Where is the Folsom Pickleball Club home court location and how many courts are there?

The Folsom Pickleball Club members play at Lembi Comunity Park in Folsom. You can find the park location on this Google Map link. The park has 12 lighted pickleball courts.

The pickleball courts at Lembi Park are public courts. You may drop in to play at any time. You do not need to be a member of the Folsom Pickleball Club to play there. However, some courts might be reserved for club member-only drill classes on a weekly basis at certain date and time, and occasionally, all courts might be reserved for special events. You can check our CALENDAR for those events.

For open play sessions, you can use PlayTimeScheduler to find out who may be playing there and which level the players are.

The best way to find other players is to use PlayTimeScheduler. There you can see who has scheduled a play session on which day and time and at which park location. When in doubt, you can always add a note or ask a question in the session that you’re interested in. You can also create a session yourself where others can join you. Note that players don’t have to be a club member to play on public courts such as Lembi Park in Folsom, CA.
